For over six centuries, the town of Bolesławiec in southwestern Poland has been a center of ceramic excellence. Each piece leaving our Wilmington studio carries forward that uninterrupted lineage — shaped on the wheel, painted by hand, and fired at temperatures that produce stoneware of remarkable durability.

Our story
A tradition painted
by hand, one stroke at a time
Bolesławiec pottery began in the 13th century, when local potters discovered rich deposits of high-quality clay. What started as a village craft grew into a recognized school of ceramic art — one that survives today through workshops that still train artisans in the same techniques used for generations.
At Polish Pottery Designs in Wilmington, we work directly with families of painters in the Bolesławiec region. Every piece you see here has been selected for its craftsmanship, its color harmony, and its suitability for daily use. The making
From clay to finished piece
Step one
Shaping
Each vessel is formed on a potter's wheel or pressed into traditional molds. The clay body — dense, porous stoneware — is then left to dry to a leather-hard state before firing.
Step two
Painting
Using dip-stamping and hand-brushing techniques, artisans apply cobalt-based underglazes in the characteristic floral and geometric patterns that define Bolesławiec style.
Step three
Firing
A clear glaze is applied and the pieces are fired at high temperature, producing a vitrified surface that is chip-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and built to endure decades of use.
